Sediment Erosion From Developments Flowing Into Falls Lake NC - July 2022

This video shows what occurred in the Falls Lake watershed from Friday July 8th through Wednesday July 13th. A tale told in three parts, there is footage from before a significant amount of rainfall, the effects observed on the day after the rain, and a followup study conducted a few days later. That's right—water samples were collected by the Neuse Riverkeeper and tested before and after the rain to determine how high the levels of turbidity are in Lick Creek. Spoiler alert—these are already extremely turbid waters!

This is the blasting going on to create new a development on Doc Nichols Road in Durham, North Carolina. The parcel abuts rural county land and is close to Falls Lake. Runoff from developments in this area has been seen flowing directly into Lick Creek and then dumping directly into the lake.

Runoff From Developments Flowing Into Lick Creek

This video shows the runoff from the developments on Olive Branch Road and Doc Nichols Road flowing into Lick Creek, which is a very short distance from Falls Lake. The creek flows directly into the lake, which provides water for half a million people in Raleigh and six other municipalities in Eastern Wake County: Garner, Knightdale, Rolesville, Wake Forest, Wendell, and Zebulon.
